A large—scale art mural has appeared on the facade of the Gzhel Porcelain Factory, which challenges stereotypes about traditional art. The author of the work was the artist Dmitry Dasteo, the winner of the open sketch contest, which took place from the end of May to the middle of June 2024.
Unlike many contestants who suggested putting the classic blue-and-white ornament on the wall, Dusteo chose an innovative approach. His concept is laconic graphic silhouettes of the factory’s iconic products: teapots, cups, and spoons that everyone recognizes. The key feature of the project was the lighting solution, which dramatically changes the appearance of the building at night, emphasizing the brand’s modernity.
The competition received about 50 applications from various regions of Russia and one from Kazakhstan.
“The goal was not to create a museum exhibit, but to declare that Gzhel is a modern design and relevant art,” commented Vera Konovalova, CEO of GFZ. This art object is part of a strategy to rethink the heritage and strengthen the brand’s competitive position through direct dialogue with a modern audience.
